Tokyo | Shamelessly creative

As we roamed the streets of Tokyo, the face of Bill Murray would suddenly burst into our consciousness from time to time. Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation” was never far.

Jet-lagged and culture-shocked we wandered from one area to another, with no map, no clue.In the Shinagawa area we got drunk and in Shibuya we sang karaoke. We barely slept, or not at all really.

If we were out of our minds, it was all right with us. It was not until we had visited every house of ill repute in Shinjuku that we came to our senses. It happened in Yoyogi Park. Amidst the splendor of blossoming trees we slowly came back to ourselves. In the shamelessly creative city of Tokyo.

We had been everywhere. We had really seen only people. Especially those who defy conformity with a taste and style of their own. And at times, we saw Bill Murray… Could it be that he whispers in Scarlett Johansson’s ear at the end of the movie that he feels reassured in spite of everything?

We must imagine that he does. After all, it’s happening in Tokyo, and in Tokyo only.

Indifferent, poignant and like Tokyo shamelessly creative….
As we roamed the streets of Tokyo...
People who defy conformity with a taste and style of their own..
A long-forgotten memory of a blossoming tree just came back to me out of nowhere.
